  • How much do you tip at restaurants or bars?

Seeing as inflation is approaching our American economy, people are skimping out on tipping their car-hops and waiters because they fear they won't have money for gas and groceries. Thus, sadly these people who make the majority of their paychecks off of tips, are suffering even more then most of us.

When I tip I like to tip good, like half to more then what I paid for the actual dinner.

It's more blessed to give then receive

I understand that God has blessed me with the income to purchase this meal so I'm gonna bless this person who is serving me just as God blessed me.

I just answered this Featured Question, you can answer it too!

Exactly, the way I look at it is, yes everything is expensive. Part of dining out includes tipping. Therefore, if you cannot afford to tip, then purchase food from the grocery store and make dinner at home. We all have to sacrifice. If you enjoy eating out but cannot tip, do you not think that the person who is serving you is also suffering? I myself have had to eat at home more than I used to, but its just the way it is!

Bless you for helping our servers out!

It depends. I always START my tipping at 15% -- I won't tip less than that, but I've tipped as much as 150% before. I hate it when people start their tipping out at 0% and cap it at 15%. I was a waitress for three years, and lemme tell you, you appreciate it SO MUCH when you're having a rough day and someone leaves you more than you know you deserve. And if they actually HAND it to you, and remember your name, and thank you, that can seriously make your entire day -- goodness, your entire WEEK -- absolutely wonderful.

I agree, if you can't afford to go out and eat along with leaving a tip, you shouldn't be going out to eat to begin with. It's part of the expected cost to go out to eat. Anyone that doesn't tip is slime in my opinion.

15% is an absolute minimum in my book. If the waitress does a horrible job I'll still give her at least 15%. I know I couldn't do the job they do, at least not in a busy restaurant that is. They deserve paid just like the rest of us do.

I would guess my tip probably averages around 25%. That being at least $3 on a meal of $9-12, and more if the waitress really tries, and adjusting based on the meal price as well. And then there are times like Christmas, and other holidays, where I'll try to really make her day and leave a $20 or so for her. I heard that the minimum tip should be 18% now-a-days though. Are there still people that do 15%?

Sadly, Christians are known for their poor tips. When I'm out with a group from church I try to tip extra knowing that waitstaff that work Sundays tend to get shorted, and to hopefully redeem what Christians are known for to at least some extent.

I never thought about actually handing the money to the waitress. I think I might start doing that in the future, thanks for the advice.

Well, I don't normally tip anymore since our food establishments here have "service charges" anyway. But I do leave a few coins when I eat at small canteens. Sometimes I leave my change already. I agree with you. It is better to give than to receive. ;)
